  • Warburton

Warburton is a town in Victoria, Australia, 77 kilometres east of Melbourne's central business district, located within the Shire of Yarra Ranges local government area. Warburton recorded a population of 2,020 at the 2021 census.

Warburton was named after the middle name of unpopular goldfields Police Magistrate for Castlemaine, Charles Warburton Carr by District Surveyor Clement Hodgkinson during the 1860s. It received an official title in 1884.

Great place to have lunch at as the main street offers several gastronomical outlets.

  • The Swing Bridge

The Warburton Swing Bridge is one of the town’s most loved attractions, offering visitors a fun and memorable way to experience the natural beauty of the Yarra Valley. This historic pedestrian bridge stretches across the gently flowing Yarra River and is known for its distinctive swaying motion, adding a sense of light adventure as you walk from one side to the other.

Originally built to connect the township with surrounding farmland, the bridge has become a popular spot for tourists, walkers, and families. As you cross, you’re treated to picturesque views of the river below, framed by towering trees, ferns, and native bushland. The peaceful atmosphere makes it an ideal place to slow down, take photos, and enjoy the sounds of nature.

The Swing Bridge is easily accessible from the Warburton township and connects to several scenic walking tracks.

  • Yarra River

Flowing quietly behind the main street of Warburton, the Yarra River creates a peaceful, almost hidden retreat just steps away from the town’s cafés and shops. Here, the river widens and slows, its clear waters gliding over smooth stones and reflecting the surrounding greenery.

Lined with tall trees, ferns, and native bushland, this stretch of the river feels calm and secluded despite being right in the heart of town. Gentle walking paths run alongside the water, inviting visitors to take a leisurely stroll, pause on a bench, or simply watch the river drift by. On sunny days, dappled light filters through the leaves, creating a tranquil atmosphere that’s perfect for relaxing.

  • Mount Donna Buang

Mount Donna Buang ("the body of the mountain" in the language of the Wurundjeri people) is a mountain in the southern reaches of the Victorian Alps of the Great Dividing Range with an elevation of  1,250 metres. Climb the Lookout Tower for unapparelled spectacular views over the Australian Alps. Free entry.

  • Rainforest Gallery

Rainforest Gallery. Located on the slopes of Mount Donna Buang, it consists of a 350-metre-long metal walkway elevated one metre above ground level plus a cantilever platform 15 metres above the ground which allows canopy level views of the cool temperate rainforest and giant fern trees. While there is interpretive signage, the Rainforest Gallery is unstaffed and entry is free.

  • 🌲 The Redwood Forest

🌲 The Redwood Forest – A Tranquil Escape Near Warburton

Just outside Warburton lies one of the Yarra Valley’s most enchanting natural wonders: the Californian Redwood Forest. Planted in the 1930s as part of a forestry experiment, this remarkable grove now features more than 1,400 towering redwoods arranged in striking, perfectly straight rows.

These majestic trees reach up to 55 metres high, creating a breathtaking natural cathedral overhead. Walking among them is a calming, almost otherworldly experience — the air cool and still, the forest floor soft underfoot, and the tall trunks forming a peaceful sanctuary from the outside world. Visitors often describe it as stepping into another realm of quiet and reflection.

The Redwood Forest is ideal for gentle strolls, photography, forest bathing, or simply taking a moment to pause and breathe. It’s a favourite stop for nature lovers, families, and anyone seeking a serene escape surrounded by beauty. Free entry.
