Korumburra is a town in Gippsland, Victoria. It is located on the South Gippsland Highway, one and a half hours drive south-east of Melbourne, in the South Gippsland Shire local government area. At the 2016 census Korumburra had an urban population of 3,639.
Surrounded by rolling green hills, the town is 227 metres (745 ft) above the sea level.
Korumburra owed its early prosperity to coal mining; 2,000,000 tons of coal were produced by the Korumburra coalfields from 1893 to 1962. Korumburra is known as the "Heritage Centre of South Gippsland". It is the home of Coal Creek Historic Park and Museum.
The region is home to the world's largest earthworms.
Coal Creek: Gippsland’s Living History Village
Just outside Korumburra in South Gippsland, Coal Creek Historic Village invites visitors to step back into the 19th and early 20th centuries, when coal mining and pioneer life shaped the region. Spread across 27 hectares of bushland, this open-air museum features over 50 faithfully restored buildings, from cottages and shops to a working blacksmith forge and vintage train station.
• Explore heritage streetscapes with period costumes, horse-drawn carts, and old-timey charm
• Visit the coal mine exhibit to learn about Gippsland’s industrial roots
With free entry and a relaxed, interactive atmosphere, Coal Creek is perfect for history buffs, and curious travellers keen to experience Victoria’s pioneer spirit firsthand. It’s storytelling you can walk through—complete with creaky floorboards and the scent of eucalyptus in the air.
🌿 Korumburra Botanic Park & Paradise Falls: A Gentle Nature Escape
Just outside of Korumburra, the Botanic Park offers peaceful lawns, shady trees, and a charming rotunda—perfect for picnics and quiet reflection. The highlight is Olsen’s Walk, a short rainforest loop along Coalition Creek, where tree-ferns, swamp gums, and native mint-bush line the path. Interpretive signs hint at the elusive Giant Gippsland Earthworm, adding a quirky local touch.
🌊 Paradise Falls, tucked at the far end of the park, is a small cascade that lives up to its name after rain. Surrounded by ferns and mossy rocks, it’s a tranquil spot to pause and listen to the water tumble.
🌄 Poowong Lookout & Sculpture Park: Art Meets Panorama
Perched above the rolling hills of South Gippsland, the Poowong Lookout and Sculpture Park offers sweeping views and a playful blend of nature and creativity. It’s a compact but memorable stop for travellers exploring the region.
🗿 What to Expect
• Panoramic Vistas: From the lookout, gaze across lush farmland and forested ridges, with views stretching toward the Strzelecki Ranges.
• Sculpture Trail: Scattered across the grassy slope are whimsical and thought-provoking sculptures created by local artists. They reflect Poowong’s rural spirit, community pride, and love of storytelling.
🌳 Nyora Park & Historic Railway Station.
Nyora Park is a quiet green space ideal for a relaxed picnic or a short stroll, with open lawns and shady trees just off the main street. Nearby, the Nyora Railway Station—a weathered timber building from the early 1900s—stands as a poignant relic of South Gippsland’s rail history. Though abandoned and no longer in use, its platform and signage evoke the town’s role as a once-busy junction. A must-see for heritage lovers and the curious.
🌉 Loch Suspension Bridge
Tucked behind the Loch Village, this charming pedestrian suspension bridge spans Allsop Creek with more than a gentle sway and offers scenic views. Originally built to connect the town to its recreation reserve, it’s now a favourite photo spot. Not suitable for visitors with a fear of heights.
🌄 Cape Horn Lookout.
Cape Horn Lookout offers one of South Gippsland’s most breathtaking panoramas. Perched high above the Bass Valley, it reveals sweeping views of rolling farmland, forested hills, and distant ranges. A popular spot for photographers and sunset seekers. No walking involved.
